TOKYO -- Toshiba's American nuclear power unit, Westinghouse Electric, has been urged by the U.K.'s industry regulator to pick up the pace of requested reactor design improvements that are necessary before the final certification process can be completed.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation recently noted in a quarterly update that there has been "slippage" during the closure phase of the generic design assessment (GDA) of the  AP1000 advanced pressurized water reactor, a necessary step before the reactors can be built. Westinghouse has issued a statement that it "has delivered revisions ... to the regulators to address their concerns," indicating that it is pushing to accelerate the completion process.
